Author'snote: this is my very first Eragon fan fiction so please becritical (but not too critical) to help me be a better author.

Eragon'seyes snapped open to the rustling of someone opening his and Roran'stent flap. A soldier of the Varden was crouching in the entrance, upon seeing Eragon, he tried to bow, but found it too difficult andcarefully stepped closer. Eragon sat up and leaned towards thesoldier, indicating Roran's sleeping form across the tent.

'Thelady Nasuada requests your presence, Shadeslayer; I believe she isplanning the Varden's next move with help from our generals.' Hewhispered,

'OK,'Eragon yawned, 'what time is it, by the way?' he asked as thesoldier began to leave the tent,

'It isapproaching 10 hours, sir', he stated 'but if you'll excuse meI really have to report in', and with that he stepped outside.

10hours! he thought, that battle must have really taken it outof me, and my fight with Murtagh… No! he mentally slappedhimself, I have a duty to my liege that comes first; I can dwellupon Murtagh later.

Hemuttered a small spell to keep Roran asleep, feeling the aches ofyesterday, while he quickly changed into his full armour; the Empirecould mount a counter attack at any time. Emerging from the tent, hesquinted as his eyes adjusted to the comparatively bright light fromdarkness. He quickly searched for Saphira with his mind, and foundthat she must have been at her limit as well yesterday, for she wasin a deep sleep, emanating a rumbling snore from where she sleptbehind the tent. He briskly set off towards Nasuada's relativelyhuge tent, it was more like a pavilion, and was easy to find due toits deep purple sides contrasting with the white tents of soldiers.Along the way, any people he passed either bowed or stopped to say'Hail, Argetlam', as respectively as they could.

Uponarriving at the tent, two guards pulled aside the flap for him to getthrough, and Eragon just remembered to thank them before he went in.

All headsturned his way as he entered, and Nasuada quietly said to him,

'Wellnow that you're finally here, we can start', Eragon of courseknew that she was joking, but some of the generals who heard it werehorrified that she would insult such a powerful ally. Raising hervoice, Nasuada then announced,

'Right,I'm sure you all know that the choices we must make today areextremely important, and could prove fatal if we do not make theright ones. Do we hold our ground? Do we retreat to Surda? Do we takethe fight to Galbatorix? We must think things through verycarefully. So, to get the ball rolling I will tell you my plan, andwe can modify it if necessary. Now, as we are currently undersupplied and our army is not at its original strength, I suggest thatwe retreat to Surda for the time being, at least until we havereceived recruits and replenished our weapons supply. Then, using ourspies in the empire, we will be able to determine when Galbatorixplans to attack, and prepare for it. We must also find out when andwhere Islanzadi's army will attack, we can co-ordinate our planwith theirs. It may not be a very cunning plan, but for the moment Ithink that it's the only one we've got.'

'Well Ithink that that's a fine plan, Ma'am,' a general commented, accompanied by nods all round,

'Iagree; we would not stand another clash with the Empire's forces, which is what we'll get if we stand around here for long enough'another concluded.

'OKthen, if that's settled then it's just how we'll be able tocontact Islanzadi', Nasuada said, when Arya popped up in the crowdand said,

'I'msure I'll be able to send a message to her, with the help of ourbest spell casters, when they arrive.'

'Good, that's another matter sorted. The only other one is what you'regoing to do, Eragon,' Nasuada turned to him 'I would have hopedthat you could stay with the Varden for at least a little timelonger, but am I right in assuming that you must return to the elvesas soon as possible?'

'I'mafraid you are right, my lady, but that may be delayed as it seemsthat I have somehow acquired even more choices. I promised my cousin,Roran that I would go with him to rescue his betrothed, Katrina, butfor that I will need to train him, which I have no time for since wemust go as fast as I can if we want to find her alive, and I mustalso travel to Farthen Dur which is where I assume Hrothgar'sfuneral will be taking place, and both me and Saphira have otherpromises to be fulfilled,' he looked at Elva 'as well as keepingto my oath in the ancient language that I would return as soon asevents permit!' he then realized that he had been slowly raisinghis voice while he was speaking. 'I need time to think' was allhe said as he went out of the tent back towards his own.

Across hismental link he felt Saphira awake at his outburst,

Littleone, what are you shouting about at this hour? she asked him, still waking up herself.

I justdon't know what to do, Saphira he said, as he thought ofMurtagh's words once more.

Alright, I admidt I liked the book, I think it could have been a little bit shorter in some areas, and a little less violent. I mean Roran goes a little overboard with the violence, and there were a few little gross details that I thought could have been left out, for example the arrow that was stabbed into a foot, I thought the description of that was pretty disgusting, but hey that's just my opinion, maybe its just the thought of foot stabbing. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this book for young children, but when kids are older, say around sixteen that is a much better age to be reading this book.NOTE: Many people complain about Paolini copying from other books. I can see how they would come to that conclusion; I also see many similarities, especially to Star Wars. However, I still let myself enjoy the story, accepting it for what it was, a nice book to be read on a rainy day with a mug of hot chocolate.

Your children will love it, thought I would warn you of some reference to a form of atheism, vegetarianism, and other such beliefs. In the books the main character becomes a vegetarian; you may have to explain this concept to your children. When I first read Eragon, I was 14 years old. I was enthralled by the book, and eagerly awaited for more.

Eldest came out, and I didn't mind it, but I thought Eragon was better. Brisingr is MUCH better than both of it's predecessors! I highly recommend it, IF: you like a book being descriptive- I do, and if you like thick books. This was a pleasant rainy-day-read for me.

Some parents may want to check it out first as it has some elements of spirtuality from different beliefs, as well as vegetarianism. Nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, but your child may have some questions and you will want to be ready for that. Also it can get pretty gruesome- human sacrifice, lots of battles, etc. It was a great read, and I can hardly wait for the final installment!
